“Won the Championship of Japanese F1 GP”
This vehicle is a historic individual which, driven by Gerhard Berger, won the 15th round of 1987 Formula One Grand Prix series held in Suzuka, Japan.
This vehicle is representing the celebration of a return of Ferrari to F1. In addition, it has been remembered by numbers of Ferrari fan in Japan as the vehicle with most forgettable history.
For the Grand Prix in 1987, Ferrari hired Michele Alboreto as the first driver (# 27) and Gerhard Berger as the second (# 28).
But, the newly developed V6 turbo-charged engine was no stable and it caused one trouble after another to cause a great pain during the beginning of season.
Going into the second half of the season, a team begun to improve the score as the engine stabilized and the machine fully developed. At the 12th round of Grand Prix at Portuguese, Berger got the pole position and finished at second place at the final race.
At the 15th round of Grand Prix held at Suzuka Circuit, Japan, Berger got the pole position again. Next day, he finished in pole- to-win at the final race. That was the first time in two years for the team to win the race
Then just two weeks later at the 16th round held at Adelaide Street Circuit, Australia, Gerhard Berger won the race again from the pole position and ended the season of 1987 consecutively winning twice. Amazingly, he became the first Ferrari driver to win back-to-back ever since Gilles Villeneuve won two in a row at Monaco and Spain in 1987.
Better yet, Ayrton Senna of Lotus, then at the second place, was disqualified due to having the oversized brake ducts. Michele Alboreto moved up to the second place and Ferrari F187 finished the season of 1987 by one-two finish.
The F187 is truly a legendary racing car that reminded people all over the world of the Ferrari’s return.
Time passes by, a mysterious coincidence surely exists, and the machine became a part of our inventories at Bingo Sports. We had been renting out the vehicle for various events because we want to make the legacy of machine lasts forever. The car was exhibited at Twin Ring Motegi and Suzuka Circuit countless times and it ran the course of Suzuka when Sound of Engine event was held.
Finally, the time had come. During Japanese Grand Prix of 2015, Gerhard Berger got behind the wheel of the legendary vehicle again and exhaust noise was echoing throughout the drive. It was as if seeing a reply of the legendary moment from 28 years.
“History of Ferrari F1 F187”
F187 is a new design perfectly developed for F1 season of 1987. Gustav Brunner, a designer, left the team leaving a design behind. John Barnard who newly participated in Ferrari made some improvements and Harvey Postlewaite became in charge of engineering at circuit.
Bank angled V6 turbo engine was changed to 90-degree from 120-degree and cylinder block changed its material from aluminum alloy to cast iron. Even though boost pressure was limited to 4 bar due to obligational installation of pop off valve, the vehicle showed output of 950hp at preliminary race and 880hp at the final race.
The mounting of Gearbox was changed from transverse: used since 312T series, to longitudinal which made the height of vehicle lower than F186, and more compact than Side Pontoon. ARC1, introduced by Gustav Brunner at Rial Racing in 1988, is very similar to F187 and named as “Blue Ferrari”.
F187 was produced 7 cars in total, chassis number 95 to 101, and #101 was used as a spare car for Grand Prix held in Mexico, Canada and the United States in 1988.
