“The history of Porsche 911”

It is only Porsche 911 series that have kept the same concept persistently and for a long time in the history of a sports car.

911 was initially developed as “Porsche 901”.
However, Peugeot acquired the right to use a three-digit name that placed 0 in the middle in France. Thus, Porsche announced the car as “911” rather than producing the ones with the different name for the French market.
911 series (Narrow Porsche) that had same RR layout as Porsche 356 debuted in 1963 Frankfurt Motor Show. In 1964, it started to sell.

Compared with 356, the wheelbase was 10cm longer, (full length was about 21cm longer) and the interior became bigger.
It was designed to be more comfortable and faster as a sports car than 356.
The engine was newly designed and displacement became larger 1991cc compared with 356’s 1600cc. It mounted air-cooled flat-6 boxer engine that produced 130ph on the rear. But the transmission was only available with a 5-speed manual called Type 901.

Production of 356 finished in 1965, but 4-cylinder engine was in high demand in the American market. So, 912 was announced as the direct replacement in the same year.
That had the same chassis as 911 and a 4-cylinder engine that produced 90ph, same as 356 was mounted.

In 1966, more powerful 911S was announced.
It produced 160ph and adopted Fuchs “five-leaf” alloy wheel for the first time in Porsche’s history. The wheel was 2.3kg lighter than the Fuchs’s previous one. Ventilated brake disc was equipped.
According to the American magazine “Car and Drive”, 0-60mph was 6.5 seconds and 0-100mph was 18.2 seconds, and the maximum speed was 140mp/h (about 225km/h). It boasted amazing driving performance at that time.

In 1967, Targa model made its debut.
Behind that, Porsche deeply concerned NHTSA may impose full-open-top convertibles in the United States. The Targa roof was designed to meet that requirement and reinforced by the anti-roll bar.
Targa stood for `shield` in Italian and was named after famous road racing “Targa Florio” held in Sicily.

In 1969, direct injection system was introduced.
However, that year, wheelbase turned to be 5cm longer to stabilize driving and wheel arch was added to house the wheel with a wider rim. So, body design inevitably needed a little change.
In 1973, 911 Carrera 2.7RS “Nana San Carrera” that is the most popular out of narrow series was announced. It successfully performed in races and it is still very popular as the historic sports car.
In 1975, type 901 was fitted with big bumper to meet US Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards. For convenience, later models are called 930. But originally 930 indicated Turbo model although it became non-Turbo after 1978.

Thereafter, 911 stick to the concept stubbornly “flat 6-cylinder engine, mid-ship, rear wheel drive” and evolved from 964, 993, 996, and 997, and now 991.
